    UAE plans for telecommunications disaster

(MENAFN) The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) announced the National Emergency Plan, an alert system and emergency action plan for cases where the telecoms network is damaged by a terrorist attack, sabotage, cyber attack, natural disaster, or technological failure, The National reported. The plan set four different alert levels for varying degrees of urgency. In the case of a "red" alert, the TRA may take over the telecoms network. The plan also sets government and health agencies, Armed Forces, emergency services, and the petroleum production industry as priority groups for the restoration of services. The local telecom operators, Estisalat and du, must comply with the plan by the end of this year. Osman Sultan, du CEO, and Abdulrahman, Etisalat senior vice president of regulatory affairs, said they thought that the plan would add only minimal extra costs as both operators already have emergency plans. The new legislation will just help the two operators and the TSA to coordinate in the case of an emergency. The plan comes after damaged undersea internet cables caused the internet to go down several times. This year 30 percent of du's Gulf users lost internet after a cable was cut.
