Saudi Arabia says no visas for Indonesian, Filipino workers

(MENAFN) A Saudi Ministry of Labour spokesman said Wednesday that Saudi Arabia plans to stop issuing work visas to Filipinos and Indonesians saturday, reported Arab News. The spokesman said that the decision was agreed upon by the three countries. Saudi Arabia plans to bring maids from other sources. The decision comes after a series of controversies between the countries over abuse of maids. Earlier in June, the International Labor Organization (ILO), composed of governments, trade unions, and employers' organizations, adopted a treaty that will increase protections for domestic workers in the Gulf after concerns over human righs violation. Human Rights Watch investigations have said that problems include insufficient government monitoring of recruitment agencies that mislead foreign workers and leave them with huge debts, forced labor, and human trafficking.
