    Sharp decline in Egyptian tourism sector

    (MENAFN) Head of International Tourism Sector, Samy Mahmoud, at Egyptian Tourism Authority (ETA) said that due to the recent turmoil and the Egyptian revolution, tourism declined by 28 percent during the first half of the year, reported Gulf news. Mahmoud stated that the numbers of Arab tourists visiting Egypt from January to July decreased especially the gulf tourists. The number of UAE tourists decreased by 58 percent to reach 55,000, Kuwaiti visitors also decreased by 52 percent, Saudi tourists decreased 48 percent and finally Jordanians by 17 percent, ETA's head further explained. On another note, the numbers of tourists from neighboring countries such as Libya, Sudan and Palestine witnessed a slight increase, compensating a little for the drop in gulf's tourists. Also, Opening Rafah crossing had a positive impact on increasing the numbers of the Palestinian tourists. It is worth mentioning that Egypt received 5.7 million tourists in the first half compared to 8.2 million visitors in the same period last year.
