    Tourism sector in Mena hit by political unrest

    (MENAFN) The UN World Tourism Organization said that due to the political unrest that hit the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), in 2011's first six months, tourism to the region went down notably, reported The National. The organization added that the number of tourists arriving to North Africa dropped 13 percent whereas it slipped 11 percent in the Middle East, on the other hand, in 2010, the Middle East was the fastest-growing region for arrivals, where the number grew 14 percent, following a 4 percent drop in the previous year. It also said that last year, global tourism sector rebounded strongly, where the number of arrivals reached 940 million with an increase of 6.6 percent from the previous year, whereas international tourism receipts rose 4.7 percent to USD919 billion. It is worth noting that since travelers avoided other countries in the region, the UAE reported strong growth in occupancy levels.
