Bahrain's telecom operators lag behind Gulf rivals in 4G service

(MENAFN) Batelco's general manager for mobile networks, Abdulhamid Chehab, said that as a result of Bahrain's regulator's delay in allocating the right spectrum to be used in 4G networks, the country's telecom's operators lagged behind other Gulf operators, reported Reuters. Chehab added that Bahrain's regulator didn't provide a firm response to the country's telecom operators about when and which spectrum would be taken. He also said that operators in Saudi, Qatar and the UAE launched Long-term evolution (LTE) networks (4G) in September, which potentially delivered data speeds more than double that of previous platforms. It is worth noting that in Bahrain, Batelco competes with units of Saudi Telecom Co. and Kuwait's Zain. Every six months, the company's average data volume per user is doubling and the new technology would meet growing demand for data and offset the drop in voice revenues.
