Jordan asks Iraq for alternative exports route

(MENAFN) a Jordanian trade official said that his government asked Iraq to open boarders for alternative exports route to Turkey and Europe in case Syria closes its own borders, AP reported. From his side, trucking union president Mohammed-Khair Daoud said that the delays are damaging the food shipments, which saw a 20 percent fall in trade traffic via Syria in the last few weeks. Jordan exports about 5,000 tons of food, mainly fruit and vegetables, on a daily basis through Syria, which then are shipped onward to Turkey overland or to Europe via Syria's Mediterranean coast. Jordanian truck drivers reported tight security checks at the boarders, because of the ongoing political unrest, which left drivers and their goods stranded for several days at the Syrian frontier.
