Opening of Iraq land border approved by Saudi Cabinet

(MENAFN) The green light has been given for discussions between Saudi Arabia's Cabinet and Iraq to open a land border crossing for trade between the two countries for the first time in 27 years.

The Cabinet authorized the minister of finance to work "with the Iraqi side a draft agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Government of the Republic of Iraq on establishment of Iraqi Arar Port", during a session on Tuesday.

Due to the 1990 invasion of Kuwait by late Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, the border has officially been closed ever since.

Nevertheless, Iraqis have still been able to use the crossing for their Hajj or Umrah pilgrimages.
