Saudi Arabia: tourists to be given back VAT

(MENAFN) Local media reported Saudi Arabia General Authority of Zakat and Tax (GAZT) is to operate on a mechanism that is guaranteed to allow value-added tax (VAT) to be brought back to tourists.

Arab News was informed by director Hamoud Al-Harbi of GAZT's VAT operations centre "according to executive regulations, it is possible for companies to return the VAT to tourists on products they are taking to their countries."

He further added "the mechanism will be decided later as we are still working on the process, mechanisms, rules and payment. Some countries, for example, specify what amount to return; if it is less than $134 it won't be returned."

In early January when VAT is broadly adopted across Saudi Arabia, as Al-Harbi explained in a statement, the tax-free system implementation for tourist purchases won't be functional.
