Morocco places tenders for 5 wind farms

(MENAFN) Morocco's state-run power utility, ONE, placed tenders for five wind farms, totaling 850MW, for international companies to submit expressions of interest, Reuters reported. The tender also includes the separate procurement and maintenance of a 200 megawatt wind farm. The bids will be accepted until March 2, the bidders who shall pass the preliminary, expression-of-interest phase will be invited to bid in an international tender, which will be launched in the second quarter of this year, said ONE. Morocco is seeking to meet its domestic demand of energy, growing by 6 percent annually, as it has no oil or gas of its own, and cut high-bill energy imports. The country also aims at exporting energy to its high-energy-demand trade partner, the European Union. The project will be carried out under PPP with state-run ONE, the Energy Investments Company and King Hassan Fund. Morocco previously unveiled a solar power plan is worth USD9 billion that includes five power stations to account for 38 percent of the country's installed power generation capacity by 2020. Both wind and solar energy development schemes should reduce Morocco's annual imports of fossil fuels by 2.5 million tonnes of oil equivalent and prevent emissions of 9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
