    Algeria's 2011 wheat imports surge 41.5%

    (MENAFN) Algeria's customs said that last year, the country imports of soft and durum wheat surged 41.5 percent, posting a record high of 7.42 million tons, reported Arab News. The customs added that the volume of soft wheat imports grew 39.23 percent to 5.55 million tons, compared with 3.98 million tons in 2010, whereas imports of durum wheat hiked 48 percent to 1.85 million tons, from 1.24 million tons. It also said that the main supplier for the country's soft and durum wheat was France with 4.53 million tons and 1.096 million tons respectively. On the other hand, Algeria's domestic cereal harvest in 2011 dropped to 4.2 million tons, due to poor weather conditions, moreover, in 2010, the harvest reached 4.56 million tons, down from 2009's record of 6.1 million tons. It is worth noting that in spite of an increase in imports, Algeria's trade surplus soared 62.5 percent to USD26.9 billion, from USD17.6 billion.
