Jobless rate among MENA's youth the highest globally

(MENAFN) The United Nations said that jobless rate amongst youth in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region was the highest in the world, reported Gulf News. The UN, in its Youth Employment: Youth Perspectives on the Pursuit of Decent Work in Changing Times report added that in 2011, unemployment youth rate in the Middle East was at 26.2 percent and in North Africa it was at 27.1 percent, with Arab Spring uprisings contributing to the problem. On the other hand, in 2010, total youth jobless rate in the Middle East was 25.5 percent, and in North Africa it was 23.8 percent. It also said that female youth unemployment in the Middle East in 2010 was at 39.4 percent, whereas it was at 34.1 percent in North Africa, attributing the high rate to limited access to jobs, a shortage of equal opportunities and treatment, relatively short maternity leave periods and social norms. It is worth noting that the UN urged Arab countries to promote entrepreneurship and self-employment among the youth to reduce jobless rate.
