Iraq to boost power capacity by 1,500MW

(MENAFN) Iraqi Deputy Electricity Minister, Salam Qazaz, said that in the coming few months, the country would boost its national grid's capacity by nearly 1,500 megawatts (MW), reported Arab News. Qazaz added that demand for electricity in Iraq grows by 15 percent in the summer, whereas it increases by 2 percent to 3 percent annually worldwide. He also said that Iraq's power availability ranged between 7,000 MW to 8,000 MW, however, as several new projects would come online and others would be upgraded, power availability would grow between 9,000 MW and 9,500 MW this summer. It is worth noting that Iraq's national grid supplies just a few hours of power a day since electricity supplies collapsed following the US-led invasion in 2003, when power factories were looted or went without maintenance.
