Bahrain unrest results in USD800m loss for businesses

(MENAFN) An official report said Bahrain businesses incurred about USD800 million in losses due to the civil unrest Bahrain saw over the past 12 months, local media reported. The kingdom's National Assembly said in its report that USD200 million were direct losses from the turmoil, while USD600 million losses resulted from the aftermath, Gulf Daily News said. The report was compiled by a joint committee consisting of representatives of Bahrain's Shura Council, its parliament and the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Bahrain was among those countries hardest hit by the Arab Spring, as the country's Shi'ite Muslim majority demonstrated against Bahrain's Sunni-led government for months, which led to economy instability. Bahrain's own government took steps to make reforms to calm the public anger and cool off the political situation.
