Bahrain allocates USD26.5m for unrest victims

(MENAFN) Bahrain earmarked USD26.5 million compensation fund for the families of those killed and those injured as a result of security forces' actions during Arab Spring protests, Arabian Business reported. The eligible ones to receive a payout include expatriate workers and the families of policemen, as well as those whose property was damaged during the unrest. Claims for compensation will be accepted starting from March 18, the Gulf state's Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Minister. 82 civilians have been killed and 2,900 injured during the unrest that broke out in February 2011, according to the Bahrain Centre of Human Rights. The government said earlier this month that the unrest had caused the country's economy and business community an estimated USD800 million.
