Oman's Nawras close to launch 4G

(MENAFN) Oman's mobile operator Nawras said it started started testing 4G technology to offer it to its customers, Oman News Agency reported. CEO Ross Cormack said 3G coverage by the company in the sultanate now stood at 53 percent, compared to 87 percent for broadband. Fourth generation networks will be able to deliver high speed data downloads including high definition (HD) broadband and mobile TV services, he added. Nawras's subscribers reached 1.9 million last year, while the number of fixed line customers stood 27,000, according to Cormack. Operators in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE have launched long-term evolution (LTE) networks, or 4G, while Oman and Bahrain were lagging behind due to delays in regulators allocating the spectrum for next-generation high speed networks.
