UAE's Etisalat to introduce mobile payments in Afghanistan

(MENAFN) UAE's Etisalat is set to extend its mobile payment services in Afghanistan, through its partnership with utility Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), Arabian Business reported. The partnership deal is aimed at enabling customers of DABS's 300,000 customers in Kabul to pay their electricity bills through Etisalat's mobile payment system. The service allows customers to pay bills or make remittances using SMS text messages, which is cheaper than through banks or money transfer firms. Etisalat is currently running money transfer and bill payment services in six countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Tanzania and plans to expand this to the 17 countries in which it operates in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. More than USD1.8 billion was transferred in 2011 across its Etisalat's mobile payment system in the UAE, the company said in March.
