Abu Dhabi keen to improve labor conditions: WAM

(MENAFN) Abu Dhabi spent USD5.4 billion in 23 labor cities which are capable of hosting 385,000 workers, state news agency WAM reported. Abu Dhabi government fined 5,470 companies between June 2010 and May 2012 for violations of living standards, while 648 companies undertook remedial actions, the news agency added. Labor cities in Abu Dhabi are currently occupied by 195,000 workers, or 51 percent, according to the official news agency. WAM also said that UAE's capital emirate was working on rules and regulations to ensure that workers have the best possible living conditions. Among those regulations, Abu Dhabi required companies to transport their workers between their worksites and the labor cities, and forbids them to accommodate workers on construction sites or in other crowded places under unsanitary conditions. The Government of Abu Dhabi said routine inspections will continue to ensure that companies adhere to its obligations to laborers. In March, UAE was commended for improving conditions for foreign laborers working on the construction of the USD27 billion Saadiyat Island project.
