Abu Dhabi's Khalifa Port on track for opening in September

(MENAFN) Officials have confirmed that Abu Dhabi's Khalifa Port, the first semi-automated container terminal in the Middle East, is set to start operations on September 1 after undergoing "intensive and full scale tests", Arabian Business reported. Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) said that the port has received its first commercial container vessel as part of the testing phase. The port, which was built to replace Mina Zayed, covers a wide area, measuring 9 square kilometres, including the 2.7 sq km man-made port island, and is able to service the world's largest seagoing container vessels. ADPC added that the Shanghai seaborne "Ever Dynamic" vessel arrived to Khalifa Port on July 18, carrying a total of 4,173 TEUs. Phase one of the port will initially handle 2.5 million TEUs containers and 12 million tons of general cargo annually. That is expected to increase to 15 million TEUs and 35 million tons of general cargo annually by 2030.
