Bahrain Air open to a merger with Gulf Air

(MENAFN) Bahrain Air managing director, Ibrahim Al-Hamer, stated that at the current time, the carrier welcomes a merger with local rival Gulf Air, as the two airlines are in dire need for such a move, reported Arabian Business. Last week, Gulf Air's CEO, Samer Majali, whose company has slashed a number of routes in recent months to lessen losses, said that the Gulf kingdom can't afford having two airlines. Bahrain Air's CEO, Richard Nuttall, noted in an interview with Arabian Business in March that a merger would allow both firms to widen their existing network of routes, amid a limited number of traffic rights available. It is worth noting that both loss-making carriers were affected negatively by the political turmoil in the region, which also swept Bahrain, moreover, they are facing fierce competition from GCC rivals, in the midst of growing fuel prices and falling passenger traffic.
