Winner of Saudi fly license to be entitled to discounted fuel

(MENAFN) The winner of Saudi Arabia's new domestic aviation license would be able to buy fuel at the same subsidized price as national carrier Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia), local media reported. Saudi Eqtisadiah Arabic newspaper quoted the announcement from the General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA). The wining bidder will be announced in October, while operations are expected to start at the end of next year. Bahrain's Gulf Air and Qatar Airways were short-listed among the final bidders for the license. Saudi Arabia, the biggest Arab economy with a population of over 27 million, still has one of the smallest airline networks in the region relative to its size. Saudia and low-budget carrier National Air Services (NAS) are the only options for flying within the country, where demand for flights is high. Last year saw a 13.6 percent increase in passenger traffic across the Kingdom's 27 airports to over 54 million passengers, according to GACA.
