Saudi Arabia Okays USD16.5b transport upgrade in Makkah

(MENAFN) The Saudi government has nodded a USD16.5 billion plan to build a bus network and a metro system in its holy city of Makkah, state news agency SPA reported. Makkah receives over 6 million visitors from across the globe every year for the Haj and Omra pilgrimages. This has prompted the authorities to make a plan to overhaul the transportation system in the city. The plan includes the construction of four metro lines of a total length of 182 km across the city, with 88 stations, according to SPA. The overall project timetable is 10 years. Saudi Arabia is also spending billions on upgrading the transport system in the capital Riyadh and on a high-speed rail line connecting Makkah with the holy city of Madinah.
