Poland wants a discount on Qatar's LNG supplies

(MENAFN) Polish treasury minister said his country will enter in talks with Qatar over a discount for future liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from Gulf country, Reuters reported. Poland like other European countries is seeking to lower its dependency on Russian energy supplies. Its first LNG terminal on the Baltic Sea is set to open in the second half of 2014, which will give access to global LNG market away from traditional Russian supplies. The USD654 million terminal in the Polish port of Swinoujscie will handle 5 billion cubic metres of gas annually. Qatari state-run exporter Qatargas will provide around a third of the terminal's supplies after the countries signed a 20-year contract in 2009. Under the current contract, Poland will pay USD340 to USD380 per 1000 cubic metres, Mikolaj Budzanowski said. This is lower than the USD400-USD500 Poland pays Russia, he added.
