Turkey wants Qatar to join in LNG terminal project

(MENAFN) Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said the government will enter in talks with Qatar over building a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Turkey, Reuters reported. The joint project, which is planned to be located on Turkey's Aegean coast, aims to help meet rising domestic needs, moreover, it comes to support Turkey's role as an energy supplier to Europe, he said. Yildiz said the planned terminal on the Gulf of Saros would have an annual capacity of 5 million to 6 million cubic metres. This would help meet Turkey's LNG needs as well as neighboring Bulgaria and Greece, he added. Qatar is the world's largest LNG exporter but mainly sells to Asian markets. Turkey currently has no long-term contracts with Qatar but is starting to negotiate them, Yildiz said.
