ME carriers post 15.4% growth in 2012 passenger traffic: IATA

(MENAFN) The International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Director General and CEO, Tony Tyler, stated that Middle East carriers posted a 15.4-percent growth in passenger traffic in 2012, reported Xinhua News. Tyler said that airlines in the region accounted for nearly a third of the total growth in international passenger markets in the year, in spite of the political upheaval that still prevails in some Arab states. He added that passenger traffic rose 5.3 percent globally, compared with a growth of 5.9 percent in 2011. Furthermore, carriers worldwide posted a combined profit of USD6.7 billion in 2012, boosted by growth and high aircraft utilization, even though fuel prices were high. It is worth noting that the increase in passenger demand in the Middle Eastern was driven by continuing airport capacity rises in the Gulf Arab region.
