Qatar to launch Hamad Int'l Airport on April 1

(MENAFN) Qatar's Civil Aviation Authority's director, Abdul Aziz al-Nuaimi, announced that his country will launch a new airport to handle more passengers, reported Emirates 24/7. Once it's open, on April 1, Hamad International Airport will have an annual capacity to handle 30 million passengers, with the number projected to grow to 50 million by the end of the decade. Al-Nuaimi said that constructing the new facility took 8 years, with a cost of more than USD15 billion. He added that the airport, which will replace the old Doha International, spans over an area that exceeds 29 square kilometers, and comprises 2 runways, the first extends 4.85 kilometers, and the second 4.25 kilometers. It is worth noting that the first carriers to use the new airport will be 11 foreign budget airlines, whereas Qatar Airways will use the facility starting this year's second quarter.
