Kuwait to select winning bidder for USD3.2b airport in Q1

(MENAFN) Kuwait will decide the winning bidder for a new airport in the first quarter of this year, Reuters reported. 18 companies have placed their bids for the airport project, which is important in the country's economic development plan. According to Faisal al-Ustaith, a director at the Ministry of Public Works, the planned USD3.2 billion airport is aimed at receiving 25 million passengers annually. The new airport will have 51 aircraft gates, with 21 slated for use by large aircraft such as the Airbus 380, Ustaith added. The airport would aim to serve as a regional air travel hub. Kuwait currently has only one international commercial airport. The existing airport's current capacity is around seven million annually. Officials say the number of passengers has risen significantly in recent years because of population growth and more frequent travel.
