Jordan's jobless rate up to 12.8% in Q1

(MENAFN) Jordan's Department of Statistics announced that during the first quarter, the country's jobless rate grew to 12.8 percent from 11.4 percent a year ago, reported Arabian Business. The agency said that unemployment among women stood at 20.5 percent, while that among men reached 11.1 percent. The Kingdom's economy is unable to create new jobs, as the regional unrest is putting pressure on the country's economy, with the influx of Syrian refugees costing the country around USD550 million annually. The number of refugees coming from neighboring Syria is expected to grow to 1.2 million by the end of 2013, according to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). It is worth noting that in 2012, Jordan's economy expanded by 2.7 percent, and is forecasted to grow by 3.5 percent this year.
