Sudan's Darfur to receive USD3.6b donations

(MENAFN) UN secretary-general representative, Ali al-Zatari, stated that over a 6-year period, the Darfur region in Sudan will receive donations of USD3.6 billion, reported Arabian Business. However, he noted that the UN hoped to raise USD7.2 billion to help the region, noting that the Sudanese government has already pledged to donate USD2.6 billion. The recent pledges came during a donor conference hosted in Qatar with the aim of helping Darfur to tackle an armed conflict that has killed thousands. According to Qatar's Deputy Prime Minister, Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Mahmoud, Arab countries have pledged the bulk of the amount, with Qatar alone promising to provide the Sudanese region with USD500 million, in addition to the USD200 million the country had previously committed for a development bank to be based in Khartoum. It is worth noting that in 2003, Darfur fell into war where nearly 300,000 people may have been killed, according to the UN figures.
