Currency depreciation impacts Turkish publishing sector

(MENAFN) The Turkish currency has been suffering from a swift depreciation, affecting the publishing sector negatively since publishers rely on imported paper.

The accelerated currency devaluation caused Turkish newspapers to either shut down or reduce their pages, while magazines were pushed to lessen their size.

As a result of the crisis, a couple of popular newspapers were forced to suspend their print version and started publishing online over the last four months.

HaberTurk daily's chairman of the board of directors Mehmet Kenan Tekdag stated: "the cost of publishing newspaper has become unbearable at a time when advertisements are mainly channeled into digital media outlets and broadcasters."
