Iran marks 20 percent drop in handmade carpet exports

(MENAFN) Iran recorded a decline by 20 percent in its hand-woven carpets, reaching USD176 million in the first seven months of the Iranian year.

Iran National Carpet Center chair Fereshteh Dastpak revealed that "some 32 percent of our handmade carpets used to go to the United States."

The center's chairwoman explained that "we have now lost that market due to the re-imposition of the U.S. sanctions against our country."

The chairwoman further noted, as reported Eghtesadonline, that the country instated new markets aimed at balancing the fall seen in exports to the U.S.

Dastpak affirmed that "handmade carpets are deemed Iran's second flag and a symbol of Iranian identity and culture," adding: "some 2.5 million people in Iran are engaged in the carpet industry."
