Sudan lifts gold export ban after long monopoly

(MENAFN) Sudan has lifted the ban on gold exports following more than six years of a government monopoly.

Sudan's Central Bank reached a decision to enable local and international mining firms and persons to export gold.

It comes as Sudan was struggling with a smuggling epidemic, as around 113 tons of gold were smuggled into nearby countries.

"From now on, we will not allow one gram to be smuggled outside the border," stressed head of the domestic gold exporters union Abdel Monem al-Siddiq while speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat.
