Libya's olive oil industry under threat amid export halt

(MENAFN) Libya's olive oil industry is struggling with grave challenges and possible severe losses after authorities suspended exports to "protect" domestic products.

Libya has been deeply relying on the exports of its crude oil reserves since the 2011 fall of ruler Moamer Kadhafi.

Even though Libyan authorities constantly voice their wishes for the "green gold" industry to see spectacular growth, farmers demonstrated their doubts.

An owner of a press in Tarhuna, named Zahri al-Bahri, commented: "we constantly have problems getting spare parts, which are getting expensive because of the collapse of the dinar against the dollar, but also because of the cost of the oil extraction process."
