    Electricity grid linking Egypt, Sudan to be put into use

    (MENAFN) According to a spokesman of Egypt's electricity ministry, the mutual electricity grid among Egypt and Sudan will start on Jan. 12 with an opening capacity of 50 megawatts.


    Ayman Hamza, spokesman of the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy said that, "the grid voltage is 220 kv and covers a distance of about 1,000 km", he added that the grid capacity can be higher than 50 megawatts after future upgrade that the ministry is recently working on.


    The mutual grid cost about USD31.7 U.S. million, as said by Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker adding that, the country managed to build 30 power stations in 4 years.


    Egypt attained an increase in power generation in the past few years, from former power lack to power exportation, as Hamza said.


    He attributed the progress to the assist of the political leadership that led to joint collaboration among ministries and institutions including the ministries of electricity, petroleum, finance and the armed forces.
