Turkish government fines social media platforms

(MENAFN) Turkish authorities have obliged several social media platforms to pay a 10 million Turkish liras (USD1.18 million) fine for not employing local agents.

The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) disclosed that platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Periscope, Tiktok and Youtube are used more than 1 million times daily in Turkey, and those are the parties fined.

The Russian website VK managed to get out of paying the fine.

The mentioned above social media empires have local offices in several countries all over the world, but have been disregarding the Turkish government's demand for them to employ a local representative.

That is why the government implemented a new social media law as of October first which granted the companies a 30 day period to hire local agents, and any firm that does not comply will get an extra fine of 30 million Turkish liras (USD3.6 million).
