Libya blames Greece of forcing ‘fait accompli’ on joint maritime border

(MENAFN) Libya’s Tripoli-located administration on Wednesday blamed Greece of exploiting the Libyan catastrophe for forcing a fait accompli on their maritime border.

In an announcement, the Libyan Foreign Ministry criticized Greece’s "irresponsible behavior" of inking an agreement with global firms to begin research and exploration for oil and gas in the Libyan-Greek maritime borders.

The ministry stated that it had approved reports around Greece's deal with global firms as well as the Sanko Swift ship, which its main expertise is in research and surveying in the eastern Mediterranean.

"Greece is conducting exploration contracts in a disputed area in the south and southwest of the islands of Crete," the ministry stated, promising to take legal and political actions to protect Libya's rights as well as sovereignty in its maritime sectors.

Greece faces a 2019 maritime boundaries deal with the Tripoli administration inked with Turkey, which was later recorded by the UN.
