Syria, Iran sign natural gas deal

(MENAFN) Iranian Oil Minister, Massoud Mirkazemi, announced after a meeting with Syrian Oil Minister, Sufian Allaw, that the two singed an agreement by which Syria would import 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Iran by the end of 2011, reported Tehran Times. The minister added, in the meeting which took place in Tehran that trade would start once the pipelines through Turkey are built. Iran and Syria had already agreed on the construction of a 2000 kilometer network in January, along with a 142 centimeter pipeline capable of carrying around 110 cubic meters of Iranian gas daily. Mirkazemi also said that the gas supplied would cover Syria's urgent need for an extra source of gas. It is worth noting that the two ministers had an earlier meeting last year in which they discussed the export of Iran's gas to Europe through Syria, as well as to plan the construction of an oil refinery and infrastructure in Syria for the export of Iranian oil.
