Iraq eyes 36 F-16 fighters purchase from US

(MENAFN) Iraqi Premiere, Nuri Al-Maliki, said that the government has plans for purchasing 36 F-16 fighters from the United States in an attempt to enforce the countries weak air defense, reported Reuters. Al-Maliki said the deal includes double the planes that were originally intended. The country had plans for eighteen fighters only, but the government found that more would be needed after the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. The deal came as Iraq and the US government discuss whether to keep some US troops or military trainers in Iraq after the planned withdrawal of the last American soldiers at the end of 2011.
