Makkah may introduce cable car system to support pilgrimage

(MENAFN) In its continuous efforts to improve the Haj and Omra experience in the holy city of Makkah, the Saudi authorities are mulling the introduction of six cable car routes linking Makkah's Grand Mosque to three areas of the holy city, Arab News reported. The cable car system was discussed during a meeting of the Makkah Public Transport Committee, as a means of supporting existing transport infrastructure, rather then replacing it. According to the newspaper, the Centre of Excellence for Hajj and Umrah Research at Umm Al-Qura University is studying the possibility of introducing technology such as cable cars to minimize congestion in Makkah during Islamic pilgrimage periods. Adnan Gutub, director of the centre said that the centre suggested six cable-car routes to transport pilgrims from the parking areas in Kudai, Rusaifa and Taneem.
