Qatar Airways considers setting an affiliate in Saudi Arabia

(MENAFN) Qatar Airways unveiled its interest in operating a unit in oil-rich Saudi Arabia's domestic market, Arabian Business reported. CEO Akbar Al Baker was in talks with the new chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), Prince Fahad bin Abdullah Al Saud over the Kingdom's new aviation policy, the carrier said. Al Baker said that the airline was interested in the Saudi aviation market, but was waiting for the right time when certain factors in the industry are tackled. He also expressed his concern over high fuel charges and the Saudi government's policy of subsidizing airfares. Since last year's announcement that Saudi domestic flights market would open to foreign operators, GACA received 14 bids from both foreign and domestic firms. Saudi aviation market has two operators; the state-run Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) and low-cost carrier nasair.
