Saudi Haramain High Speed Rail to come online in Jan 214

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia's Haramain High Speed Rail Project, which will link the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, is scheduled to come online by January 2014, Arab News reported. The newspaper cited Transport Minister Jabara Al-Seraisry as saying that construction of the transport link, which will serve Haj and Umrah pilgrims, is on track as scheduled. The Haramain railway is expected to carry more than 3 million passengers annually. The 480km railway will also pass through the port city of Jeddah and will limit travel time between the two holy cities to just two hours. In October last year, the Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) awarded a USD9.4 billion contract for the second phase of the Haramain project to the public-private Saudi-Spanish Al-Shoula consortium.
