Abu Dhabi's Masdar to set up a solar PV plant in Mauritania

(MENAFN) Abu Dhabi-based Masdar, a leader in renewable energy, unveiled plans to build a 15MW solar power project in Mauritania, the Construction Week reported. The project, which is poised to meet around 10% of the country's electricity output, is to be developed next to a new university in the capital city of Nouakchott. The solar photovoltaic plant, which will have a power generation capacity of 15MW, will provide for the annual demand growth in the country, estimated to be at a rate of 12 percent this year. Mauritania's Minister of Petroleum, Energy and Mines, H.E. Taleb Ould Abdivall said that his country is ideal for solar projects as it has some of the highest levels of solar radiation in the world. Mauritania has an installed grid capacity of just 144MW, fuelled mostly by diesel generators, but the country has significant untapped renewable energy potential in the form of both solar and wind. The country's wind energy potential is estimated at almost four times its annual energy demand. The project will be commissioned by state-owned utility Societe Mauritanienne de l'electricite (SOMELEC), once completed.
