Regulator sees Telecom Egypt's license by mid-2013

(MENAFN) Landline monopoly Telecom Egypt is close to win a license to operate mobile services, Reuters reported. The country's telecoms regulator said it expects Telecom Egypt to get the license by the summer of 2013, and will later let mobile companies offer fixed-lined services using Telecom Egypt's infrastructure. Last month, CEO Mohamed El Nawawy said that Telecom Egypt was in advanced talks with the government on the deal and added that the company could look to set up its own independent network. Telecom Egypt, 80 percent owned by the state, has been relying on its data business to boost revenue. Currently there are three players in Egypt including Vodafone Egypt, Mobinil, which is controlled by France Telecom and UAE's Etisalat unit.
