Qatar's Ooredoo to open mobile markets in Myanmar

(MENAFN) Qatari telecoms firm Ooredoo plans to sell low-cost SIM cards Myanmar, making accessing mobile services easier in one of the world"s last virtually untapped phone markets, according to Arab News.

Less than 10 percent of the population in Myanmar is expected to have access to a telephone in Myanmar where the exorbitant cost of a SIM under former junta rule made mobile phones a luxury.

Ooredoo and Norway's Telenor have been awarded the telecom license by the government led by President Thein Sein as part of the country's plan to expand the telecom market.

Ooredoo Myanmar CEO Ross Cormack said: "This is history that we made here today," adding that the firm was bringing the very latest technologies to the long-isolated nation.
