Arab Airlines passenger traffic to grow 5 percent

(MENAFN) Airlines in the Arab region are expected to reach a 5 percent growth in passenger traffic and an 11 percent growth in terms of revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs), Times of Oman reported.

Compared to last year, the passenger traffic growth was at 7 percent, while the number of passengers hit 120 million and growth in RPKs was at 11 percent, a senior official of Arab Air Carriers Organisation (AACO) said.

Highlighting the major challenges faced by Arab airlines, air traffic management and archaic restrictions on movement of people and goods are affecting the growth of airlines in the region.

The Arab airlines have a combined fleet strength of 1,069 planes in 2013, which is expected to hit 1,685 by 2026. These airlines cover around 365 destinations, which will go up to 409 by 2026.
