UAE's Maktoum Airport freight traffic up 462 percent in Q3
(MENAFN) According to traffic report by operator Dubai Airports, Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC) registered a surge in freight volumes during the July-September period of 2014 with triple-digit growth, Emirates 24/7 reported.
During the third quarter, DWC recorded 243.284 tons of freight, which is an increase by 462.5 percent in comparison with 43,252 tons recorded during the corresponding period in 2013, while during the first nine months of 2014, the cargo reached 519.851 tons, which is up by 255.6 percent in comparison with 146,181 tons handled during the same period in 2013.
DWC attributed the growth in freight traffic to the pure cargo flights, including Emirates Sky Cargo completing their shift from Dubai International to Al Maktoum International (DWC) earlier this year.
Meanwhile, passenger numbers reached 155.997 during the third quarter of this year due to flights temporary being operated by some airlines during the runway upgrade project at Dubai International between May and July, while the number of passengers reached 734.126 during the January-September period of this year..
The airport also registered 10,784 aircraft movements during the July-September period of this year, an increase of 61.3 percent compared to 6.686 movements during the same period last year, while they increased by 112.5 percent during the January-September period of this year to reach 35.968 movements compared to 16.923 movements recorded in the first nine months of 2013.
"The permanent relocation of pure cargo operators to DWC as well as the influx of cargo charter flights will continue to drive the growth in freight volumes at DWC and we are working to expand our facilities to accommodate the anticipated growth. We expect passenger traffic to return to Q1 levels in the fourth quarter as all temporary operations which contributed substantially to passenger numbers this quarter have already returned to Dubai International," CEO of Dubai Airports, said
