Official says Iran’s giant South Pars gas field world's largest natural gas field

(MENAFN)Iran is one of the most hydrocarbon-rich areas in the world, carrying 18 percent of the global gas reserves, and the country’s giant South Pars gas is certainly the world's largest natural gas field.

South Pars are covering an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran’s territorial waters and the remaining 6,000 square kilometers, called North Dome, are located in the Arab country’s territorial waters.

The government started pursuing a new strategy to develop both sectors alongside each other, while the Islamic Republic was mostly focused on the development of its oil reserves, taking into consideration the global shift toward natural gas and the significant rise in the domestic demand.

When the crown jewel of Iran’s gas industry the South Pars gas field turned into the focal point of the Oil Ministry’s gas industry growth programs, and over twenty years after the start of the field’s development, it has nearly stood at its full potential.
