Suez waterway sustains its significance internationally

(MENAFN) The 152-year-old waterway, representing 12 percent of the international trade traffic, sustains its significance in world trade and funds the country’s economy.

The passageway, which officially opened on Nov. 17, 1869, is an manmade sea-level channel joining the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

Offering the shortest maritime way between Europe and the regions close to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean, the canal accommodates about 18,000 vessels yearly.

Goods value nearly USD10 billion go through the waterway on a daily basis, making it a significant trade passageway.
