KSA’s energy minister states it’s too early to judge new strain’s effect on crude demand

(MENAFN) According to Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s Energy Minister, the effect of the newly-detected strain of Covid-19, Omicron, on crude oil demand is not visible so far.

According to the energy minister statement to Arab News on the sidelines of an Aramco ceremony in Dhahran, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, a group called OPEC+, has postponed its mutual technical committee conference to Wednesday and the mutual ministerial monitoring committee gathering to Thursday to have extra time in evaluating the new strain’s effect.

When questioned whether OPEC+ is going to change the output goal of 400,000 barrels per day of crude each month because of the new variant, he stated “let’s keep everyone on their toes and nails.”

He was also quoted saying, “according to what is coming from the World Health Organization there are exaggerations ... but I believe that the decision we took will enable us to at least gain time to better study the matter even if with limited knowledge.”
