Iran builds first geothermal power plant
(MENAFN) Deputy Energy Minister Homayoun Haeri revealed that Iran's first geothermal power plant, with the primary electricity generation capacity of five megawatts (MW), will start operating in the present Iranian calendar year, which will be ending by the 20th of March 2021.
The Thermal Power Plants Holding (TPPH) is working on building the power plant that is located in Meshkin Shahr County in the northwestern Ardebil province.
The power plant is being built at the foot of Mount Sabalan, almost 85 kilometers northwest of Ardebil. The existing investment is estimated at around USD40.4 million.
In accordance with reports made by ILNA, and Haeri himself, Iran has managed to obtain the required funding for the project, and plan on using the electricity produced by the energy plant for the local grid, this present year.
He also declared that the actual physical progress of the project is at 71 percent, and said: "[implementation of] This project was put on the agenda in order to evaluate and exploit the geological resources in the northwest of Sabalan while indigenizing the technical knowledge of design, construction, and commissioning of geothermal power plants, as well as capacity building and empowerment of skilled manpower."
The first phase of the plant development will attribute a 5 MW turbine, while a total of 50 MW is the goal of later phases.
